Jaquez, Jackson Headline Pacers’ First Pre-Draft Workout

The Pacers have drafted the AP Pac-12 Player of the Year two years in a row, taking Chris Duarte with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and Bennedict Mathurin with the sixth overall pick in 2022.

We won’t know until draft night where Jaime Jaquez, the latest Pac-12 Player of the Year, will end up, but he was in Indiana on Friday for the Pacers’ first pre-draft workout.

Jaquez, UConn guard Andre Jackson Jr., and Missouri forward Kobe Brown headlined a group that also included Creighton forward Arthur Kaluma, Lithuanian guard Liutaurus Lelevicius, and North Dakota State center Grant Nelson. Those six prospects went through testing and drills in front of the Pacers front office, coaches, and scouts at the Ascension St. Vincent Center.

All but Lelevicius will be heading to Chicago shortly for the NBA Draft Combine, which begins on Monday. The NBA Draft Lottery will also take place in Chicago on Tuesday, where the Pacers will find out where their top pick falls in this year’s draft, which will take place on June 22. Indiana could pick anywhere from first through fourth or seventh through 11th, depending on how the ping pong balls bounce in the lottery. The Blue & Gold also own two additional first round picks — the 26th and 29th overall selections — and two second round picks.

Jaquez, a 6-7 forward, is well known to college basketball fans from his four years at UCLA. He really emerged on the national scene in Indianapolis as a sophomore, when the entire NCAA Tournament was held in Central Indiana due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jaquez scored 27 points in an overtime win over Michigan State in the First Four and then helped lead the Bruins on a surprise run to the Final Four.

I do a combination of weights, cardio and stretching. I work out 6 days per week and usually do a long walk on Sunday, which is technically my day off. Over time I’ve realized, like skincare, more isn’t necessarily better, when it comes to working out.

How many hours do you sleep on a typical night? 
7 hours. I’ve been making a conscious effort to sleep more. I use the Oura ring, which I love and really helps me stay on track. I also read Mathew Walker’s Book Why We Sleep, which I found profound. We all know more sleep

NCAA champ Andre Jackson Jr. proves value of little things

INDIANAPOLIS — Andre Jackson Jr. is confident enough in NBA talent evaluators to believe they understand his value.

It might be easy to dismiss Jackson and his 6.0 career points per game in three seasons at UConn including two as a starting guard if he hadn’t just helped the Huskies to a mildly surprising national title. During that run, all the little things the junior from Amsterdam, N.Y. stood out.

Jackson tied for the team lead in assists per game with 4.7. he was second on the team in rebounding with 6.2 per game and tied for the team lead in steals with 1.1 per game. He showed he could handle multiple positions including point guard on offense, guard multiple positions on defense and rebound above his size at 6-6, 210 pounds. And he was the guy who did the dirty work, diving on the floor or saving balls that were flying out of bounds to maintain possessions or create new ones.

Players like him don’t get picked in the lottery, and you can’t built a franchise with them as the centerpiece. But rare is the team that wins a title without such a player, or even with only one of them. That’s why the Pacers brought him in Friday as part of their first pre-draft prospect workout leading up to next week’s combine in Chicago and why Jackson trusts that his contributions shine through even in small-group workouts.

“I think the things that I do well definitely translate,” Jackson said Friday after the workout at the Ascension St. Vincent Center across from Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “Rebounding, playing defense, just being a good guy, somebody who can ignite the gym and be a voice on the court. I think all those things translate.”

Verstappen has revealed the hardest part of racing is the strain on his neck and lower back. He uses weights and balancing exercises from his home as well as a series of exercise machines.

These include a wattbike, Isomed steering wheel to build up upper arm strength and a neck dynamometer. Verstappen told JOE: “For me the most important is just the cardio. I do a lot of running, Everyone is built differently.

“Some people need to work out a lot and need to focus on their muscles to keep the muscle strength up. From my side, I think I’m a little bit lucky that I don’t need to focus too much on that. Of course, I’m doing these workouts but if I don’t do that for like a week I’m not losing a lot of strength.”

Training routine

Max Verstappen has previously revealed he trains up to two times a day to stay fit throughout the F1 season. However, he stresses the importance of rest in a packed calendar and admits to having several off days when away from the track.

Free sunset yoga, workout classes hosted by City of Grand Rapids and partners

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids is encouraging everyone to get up and moving with their eighth annual summer of free outdoor fitness classes. The 16 dance, cardio, and yoga classes will run weekly from May 15 to Sept. 1.

The city has partnered with Priority Health and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. to bring a plethora of free classes to parks and public spaces all across the city.

Classes will be held weekly, Monday through Friday and no registration is required. If a class has to be canceled due to weather, the cancellation will be announced on the Parks and Recreation Facebook pageand on the department’s cancellation hotline at 616-456-3699.

Apple may want to use AI to change your diet, sleep routine, and mood, Bloomberg reports

  • Apple is developing an AI-powered health coach under the codename Quartz, Bloomberg reported.

  • It will use Apple Watch data to monitor diet, exercise, and sleep patterns, then suggest changes.

  • While reportedly set to be released next year, the initiative remains unannounced.

The future of wellness is Artificial Intelligence, with an algorithmic coach making customized suggestions for when to exercise and sleep, what snacks to eat — even how to improve your mood.

At least, that’s what the development team at Apple seems to be thinking.

Bloomberg first reported the tech giant’s plan to create an AI-powered health coaching service, currently under development with the codename “Quartz.” It would use data from Apple Watch users to monitor sleep patterns, exercise routines, diet, and emotions, then suggest personalized healthy changes based on the AI’s analysis.

According to Apple employees who were not authorized to speak publicly about the unannounced initiative, the outlet reported, the coaching tool will be rolled out next year if development is completed on time, with an emotion log feature and an unknown aid for nearsightedness to debut later this year.

Representatives for Apple did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

What foods should I avoid with diabetes? Advice on best diet plan from a nutrition expert.

More than 10% of Americans have diabetes and roughly half of us are at risk for the disease, but most don’t know how to eat to prevent the worst outcomes.

To some degree, the advice is the same nutritionists give everybody: eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds and avoid heavily processed, packaged foods.

Most people know some features of a healthy diet: eating fruits and vegetables and avoiding soda and fast foods.

But it’s more complicated than that. Understanding how diabetes develops can help add to those recommendations and bust some myths.

The first is about weight.

While excess weight increases the risk for diabetes, proper nutrition is likely just as important, said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor of nutrition at the Tufts University Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

“Regardless of your weight, diet has a major impact,” he said.

It’s not just the glucose

Foods that lead to a spike in blood glucose drive up the amount of insulin released into the bloodstream, which over the long term, increases the risk for diabetes and makes the disease harder to control.

So what is glucose?

Refined starches, also known as complex carbohydrates, are chains of glucose molecules and have long been known to trigger this rapid spike in blood glucose. These include white rice, white bread and potatoes.

►Added sugar, a simple carbohydrate, is also well known to trigger diabetes because it’s 50% glucose.

Fructose, which makes up the other 50%, has almost no effect on blood glucose
